Global Talent Visa Application Solicitors London
The Global Talent visa is an expanded replacement for the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa application route, which was underutilised (with only a small proportion of the 2,000 places being fulfilled).
The new visa is designed to help talented and promising individuals in the following fields come to the UK and build their careers:
- Science
- Humanities
- Engineering
- Medicine
- Arts
- Fashion
- Architecture
- Film and television
- Digital technology
Applicants must be leaders in their fields, or have the potential to become leaders in their field, as determined by an endorsing body.
There will no longer be a cap on the number of Global Talent visas that can be issued, with applicants not requiring a job offer before applying, an accelerated route to settlement and dependent family members being able to work. However, since the cap on Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa was never reached, this does not represent a significant change.

How JMW Can Help
We hope that the changes made to the immigration rules with the introduction of the Global Talent visa will go some way to simplifying the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) scheme to encourage the UK government's vision of attracting the best and brightest applicants to the UK.
As specialists in UK immigration law, we can offer a full service to clients who require advice and assistance with their immigration needs. We are able to help you apply for endorsement from the Home Office, and assist in the preparation of your application so you will be granted a visa.
Our immigration solicitors will consider your circumstances and advise on the appropriate course of action, prepare all documentation for you, and liaise with the Home Office regularly to ensure a successful outcome.
With our office conveniently located in the heart of central London, we are well-positioned to assist clients based both within the UK and overseas. We are able to provide a full spectrum of services, from document-checking to the full completion of your application.
Endorsement
The Home Office has expanded the pool of UK research institutes and universities able to endorse candidates, and removed the need for those applying under the exceptional promise category to have been awarded a research fellowship, which is quite a significant change.
The endorsing bodies will include:
- The Royal Society
- The British Academy
- The Royal Academy of Engineering
- Tech Nation
- Arts Council England
- UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
Scientific Researchers
The Global Talent visa has been received with mixed reviews by the science community, with the new scheme seeming insufficient to quell the negative impact of a no-deal Brexit.
UKRI will consider applications from candidates operating within the scientific community who will be hosted or employed at a UK research organisation that has been deemed as acceptable by the endorsing body.
Applicants under this criteria will be required to provide critical contributions to work supported by a substantial research grant or award from a specifically endorsed funder.
How Long Does a Global Talent Visa Last?
Similar to the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) scheme, applicants will be issued a visa for a period of up to five years and will be able to choose how much leave they wish to be granted in a single application.
Importantly, applicants endorsed for science, engineering, humanities and medicine will be able to apply for settlement after three years regardless of whether applicants were approved under the ‘promise' criteria, ‘talent' criteria or the new ‘endorsed funder' option.
Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have been ‘economically active' within their expert field, and they continue to remain endorsed in order to qualify for further leave to remain or qualify for settlement in the UK. There will continue to be no minimum English language or maintenance requirements.
Another significant point to note is that Global Talent visa holders endorsed by one of the bodies for science, engineering, humanities or medicine will be permitted to be outside the country for as long as they need. This is based on the condition that their absences are linked to their professional activities and will not be limited by the 180-day restriction imposed on other visa categories in any 12-month period.
Document-Checking Service
If you are planning to submit your own visa application but are not fully certain that you have provided the right documents or the correct information, our Document Checking Service is an excellent opportunity to receive legal advice and identify any weaknesses or mistakes before your application is submitted.
With constantly evolving legislation and rules, our immigration team can help you navigate the often confusing maze of UK immigration law.
In addition to the ever-increasing cost of Home Office fees, a simple omission or oversight may result in your application being refused, which could have serious implications, both financially and on your chances for future settlement or applications for naturalisation as a British citizen.

FAQs About Your Global Talent Visa Application
- What is the UK Global Talent visa?
The Global Talent visa is a UK immigration route designed to attract highly skilled individuals in specific sectors. In particular, the Global Talent visa targets workers in industries such as science, technology, engineering, arts, and humanities. Unlike other work visas, the Global Talent visa does not require sponsorship from a UK employer. This gives visa holders more flexibility in their employment options, including allowing them to be self-employed.
To apply for a Global Talent visa, applicants must first secure an endorsement from one of the Home Office-approved endorsing bodies relevant to their field of expertise. They must also meet specific eligibility criteria and understand the immigration rules that apply.
The Global Talent visa allows successful applicants to come to the UK for an initial period of up to five years. The visa can be extended, and holders may also be eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain after a certain period, provided they meet the relevant requirements.
One of the attractive features of the Global Talent visa route is its flexibility. Visa holders are not tied to a specific employer and can change jobs or even be self-employed without notifying the Home Office. However, they are expected to work in the sector for which their endorsement was granted. Failing to meet the legal requirements for holding a Global Talent visa can result in the person's visa status being revoked, and lead to serious legal penalties in some cases.
This visa route offers a pathway for highly skilled professionals to contribute to the UK's economy and academic landscape. It is vital to consult a solicitor to support you in making a Global Talent visa application, to ensure you meet all of the compliance requirements at all times and to give you the highest chance of success in securing a visa.
- What are the eligibility requirements for a Global Talent visa?
The Global Talent visa has specific eligibility requirements that differ based on the field or sector in which the applicant is skilled. The foremost requirement is to secure an endorsement from one of the designated competent bodies approved by the Home Office. These bodies differ according to the sector, and in terms of the eligibility criteria they require, so it is important to tailor your application according to the specific sector or body to which you are applying.
To secure an endorsement, applicants must prove that they have exceptional talent or exceptional promise in one of the eligible fields. These fields include all of those listed above, and each has its own set of eligibility criteria that may apply.
- Science, Engineering, and Medicine: applicants often need to demonstrate they have been recognised by their peers, have a strong academic and/or professional background, and have made significant contributions to their field.
- Arts and Culture: Applicants in this category may need to demonstrate a high level of achievement in their field, and support this with evidence like media coverage, awards, or exhibitions.
- Technology: Applicants may need to fulfil specific criteria set by Tech Nation in order to receive an endorsement in this category.
- Humanities: Applicants in this category may need to demonstrate that they have academic publications, awards, or other recognitions in their field.
It is always important to consider the specific requirements for the application you are making. In rare cases, there may be different obligations - such as demonstrating that you have sufficient funds to support yourself, or that you can speak the English Language to a suitable standard. In general, the Global Talent visa does not require these criteria to be met, but they may apply in specific circumstances.
The best way to ensure you meet every requirement that is expected of you is to work with an expert solicitor in preparing your application. The team at JMW can help to make sure you fulfil all of your obligations and are in the best position to secure a Global Talent visa.
- How does a Global Talent visa application process work?
Applying for a Global Talent visa is a two-stage process and it can be complicated without legal support. Each stage has its own set of requirements, fees and procedures. If you make a mistake and your application is rejected, you may need to pay the relevant fee again, which can make it expensive to get things wrong. Further, this can interfere with your plans and delay your entry into the UK.
Here is a breakdown of the steps involved in each stage of the application process:
Stage 1: Endorsement Application
- Choose an endorsing body: Identify the appropriate endorsing body relevant to your field. Endorsing bodies are divided into relevant categories, to make it easier to choose the right body for your application. You can find a full list of endorsing bodies on the government's website.
- Prepare supporting documents: Gather all required documentation as specified by the chosen endorsing body. This may include a CV, letters of recommendation, evidence of work, and sometimes more specific documents like academic publications, awards, or media coverage. A solicitor can also advise you on the documents that could support your application and give you the highest chance of securing an endorsement letter.
- Submit endorsement application: Once you have all of the documents, you can complete and submit the endorsement application form. This is usually done online. If there is an endorsement fee, you will also need to pay at this stage.
- Await decision: The endorsing body will review your application and make a decision on whether or not to endorse you. The timescale for this can vary. If your Global Talent visa endorsement application is successful, you can move on to applying for the visa.
Stage 2: Visa Application
- Complete visa application: Within three months of receiving your endorsement, you must submit your visa application online via the UK government's website. You'll need to provide the endorsement letter as part of your application. You may also need to provide supporting documents, depending on the nature of your application - for example, in some cases you may need proof of maintenance funds. An expert immigration solicitor can help with this process and advise you on preparing an application that will maximise your chances of success.
- Pay visa fee: Pay the appropriate visa application fee, which varies based on factors such as the visa duration and whether you're applying from within or outside the UK. It is important to get your visa application right, because you will need to pay this fee once again if you need to reapply. Even small mistakes can call your visa status into question, so it is vital to ensure your application is correct.
- Submit biometric information: Attend an appointment at a visa application centre to provide your biometric information (including fingerprints and a photograph).
- Await visa decision: After submitting your visa application and attending the biometric appointment, you must wait for a decision from UKVI. The decision-making time can vary, but you will usually be notified within a few weeks. If you have worked with an immigration solicitor during this process, you will have the reassurance that your application is as strong as it could be, and that you have met all of the relevant legal requirements.
- Visa is issued: If your application is successful, you will be granted a Global Talent visa. The visa will allow you to enter and stay in the UK for a period of up to five years. This can be extended and, in some cases, you may be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain. Once you receive your visa, you can travel to the UK and begin your work, research, or other activities in your field of expertise.
Given the complexity of the Global Talent visa application process, it is advisable to consult with immigration experts when applying. While your application is never guaranteed to succeed, practical legal advice can make the process easier and improve the likelihood of success.
- How do you get endorsed for the Global Talent visa?
Securing an endorsement is the critical first stage in applying for a UK Global Talent visa. You can gain an endorsement from one of the designated competent bodies authorised by the Home Office. Each body will assess applicants' skills and achievements in a specific sector relevant to their application.
The process for endorsement varies depending on the field and the endorsing body, as each is designed to support applicants with different skills. For example, Tech Nation endorses candidates in digital technology, The Royal Society endorses those in natural sciences and mathematics, and Arts Council England endorses candidates in the arts and culture sector. It is vital to choose the correct body to apply to for your endorsement and ensure it aligns with your expertise.
Each endorsing body has its own criteria for endorsement, which usually revolves around demonstrating either "exceptional talent" or "exceptional promise" in your field. Familiarise yourself with the specific requirements laid out by the endorsing body relevant to your sector.
This includes the supporting documents you must submit with your application. Each body will specify its own application requirements, but generally the documentation you will be asked to supply can include:
- A comprehensive CV or resume outlining your career and achievements
- Letters of recommendation from established professionals in your field
- Evidence of your work, such as published papers, awards, or media coverage
- A personal statement
- Proof of specific accomplishments, in some cases
An unsuccessful endorsement does not necessarily preclude you from reapplying, but you'll usually need to wait before submitting a new application. As such, it is important to prepare your application carefully, ensuring that it meets the eligibility criteria and that the information you have supplied is correct.
Some applicants, such as those applying under the "academic and research appointments" criteria, may automatically meet the endorsement criteria if they have accepted a job offer from a recognised UK institution. However, it is still important to check - failing to meet the criteria or to follow the application instructions is never a good reason to have your application rejected.
