Domestic Violence and Abuse

Domestic abuse can take many forms:

  • Physical violence
  • Psychological abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Emotional abuse
  • Coercive control

Often it will be a combination of these examples, and almost every time it will be experienced as mixture of nightmare and shame.

We know, from years of experience, that by the time victims of domestic violence and abuse arrive at our door, they will have often spent years excusing, avoiding and forgiving the behaviour, usually out of fear, or the belief that nothing can be done.

It is possible to be freed from domestic abuse. We offer respect and remedies in equal measure.

Our approach is firstly to find the right lawyer for you from our team, then build your trust in us.

When you are ready, there are three main options:

  • The police are always the first to respond to the more extreme and urgent situations, but are also trained and encouraged to recognise and respond to all forms of domestic abuse.
  • The “non-molestation order” sounds old fashioned, but it is the first of two immediate remedies to protect you and your family from further harm.
  • The “occupation order” will restrict or prevent the perpetrator of domestic violence from occupying a home with their victims.
We recognise that children can be both the victims of and the witnesses to domestic violence, and that the experience will leave life-long scars. Any action that we support you in taking will be for your entire family.

Our work has meant that we have built strong relationships with the therapeutic community, and we have learnt that our clients need more than the short term remedy of personal security to rebuild confidence and build resilience.

We will positively encourage our clients to use us in combination with some long term support. Where children have been exposed to domestic abuse, professional support is likely to be one of the greatest gifts that you can give them.

Experience

  • Exceptional experience, of over 20 years, in representing men and women where Borderline Personality Disorders or narcissistic personality disorder has been a feature of their relationship.
  • Representing men and women who have been the object of Coercive and Controlling Behaviour.
  • The deliberate development of relationships in the therapeutic community to support our clients directly, and to assist us in supporting our clients.
