JMW has helped a man to claim £4,250 in compensation after he sustained a pressure injury during surgery as a result of substandard care.

Roger, 30, underwent an operation on his left shoulder to repair a tear he sustained in an accident. The operation was uneventful and he was discharged on the same day. However, when he returned for a review a month later, it was noticed that he had a large reddened area of skin on his trunk on the non-operated side that had become swollen, bruised and very painful.

It was presumed that this was some kind of pressure injury that had occurred during his surgery due to poor positioning on the operating table. It may have been made worse by a pooling of the chemical agent used to clean the skin prior to surgery.

Although the acutely painful stage resolved after a few days, Roger was left with a large area of discolouration on his trunk for several months. As he is a competition bodybuilder, this caused him a lot of embarrassment and inconvenience. Roger also developed a painful lump in his right buttock, which was also thought to be due to pressure during the surgery and eventually got better on its own.

After seeking advice from the experts at JMW, Roger was awarded £4,250 in compensation.
