Lawyer for victims of infected blood scandal gives expert reaction to £100K compensation awarded
JMW welcomes the government’s announcement today that they will make an interim payment of compensation to some of those infected and affected by the infected blood scandal, as recommendation by Sir Robert Francis and the Infected Blood Inquiry chair, Sir Brian Langstaff.
Nicola Wainwright, JMW Solicitors’ head of clinical negligence in London, who is representing victims infected with hepatitis C and HIV, said:
“I welcome the agreement to pay compensation, which is recognition of the state’s responsibility to those infected and affected.
“However, this interim payment is just a first step and much more needs to be done to properly compensate our clients and other victims of the scandal.
“For many, £100,000 is just a fraction of the compensation that they should expect to receive for the devastating effect of infection on their health, family life, future and dreams.
“In addition, this interim payment will only be made to those infected and bereaved partners who are registered with any of the four UK infected blood support schemes. Not everyone who was infected is registered with those schemes and there are many family members and loved ones who have suffered but who won’t receive any compensation at this stage.
“We urge the government to set up a compensation scheme as soon as possible so all those infected and affected can be properly compensated.”
