DVSA’s Load Security Guidance is Updated

The DVSA has today (9 December 2024) updated its load security guidance (which replaces the previous guidance published on 20 July 2023).

The new guidance has added more detail and includes further information on carrying out appropriate risk assessments on loads and making sure that, where needed, loads are sheeted correctly.

Changes to the guidance include the following:

  • a new section on the importance of risk assessments to help manage the issues facing those involved in securing loads
  • clarification on covering loose loads and how a risk assessment can be used to inform this decision
  • changes to the introduction – designed to clarify the standing and purpose of the guidance and how it can help operators comply with UK regulations
  • a new section on securing asbestos waste
  • a section to cover securing precast concrete sections
  • Please make sure you, your managers, transport managers and loading staff familiarise themselves with the new and updated information to make sure vehicles are loaded safely and appropriately.

The Categorisation of Defects has also been updated to reflect these changes.

The new load security guidance can be accessed here: Securing loads on HGVs and goods vehicles - Guidance - GOV.UK
