Kevin Rooney announced as new Senior Traffic Commissioner
Heidi Alexander, Secretary of State for Transport, has today (25 March 2025) announced Kevin Rooney as the new Senior Traffic Commissioner.
Mr Rooney will take up the role from his predecessor, Richard Turfitt (who will step down after the natural conclusion of his second 4-year term), from 1 June 2025 and will also retain his current role (which he has held for the past 13 years) as Traffic Commissioner for the West of England. He brings extensive experience to the role of Senior Traffic Commissioner from both his time as Traffic Commissioner and, previously, his time with the Vehicle Inspectorate and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (“VOSA”) (DVSA’s predecessor).
Mr Turfitt will return to his role as the Traffic Commissioner for the East of England from 1 June 2025. During his time as Senior Traffic Commissioner he is credited with leading the Traffic Commissioners and the road transport sector through the unprecedented and unparalleled challenges of the UK’s departure from the EU and the COVID-19 pandemic.
JMW’s Commercial Road Transport team congratulates Mr Rooney on his appointment and looks forward to continuing to appear before him and his colleagues representing operators, transport managers and professional drivers in Traffic Commissioner hearings across England, Scotland and Wales.
