New North-West Traffic Commissioner Appointed

The Department for Transport has announced its appointment of David Mullan as the new Traffic Commissioner for the North-West of England following the retirement of Gerallt Evans (who continues to sit as a Deputy Traffic Commissioner).

Mr Mullan will take up the role from 19 August 2024, transitioning from his current role within the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts in Northern Ireland where, since January 2023, he has been responsible for policy in respect of driver licensing, motor insurance, and the delivery of the Road Safety Strategy for Northern Ireland.

He previously (from 2019 to 2023) served as the Head of the Transport Regulation Unit in Northern Ireland (Northern Ireland’s regulator of goods vehicle operators) and has continued to sit as a Presiding Officer on public inquiries and impounding hearings in Northern Ireland since January 2023.

JMW’s Commercial Road Transport team has unrivalled expertise representing operators, transport managers and professional drivers in hearings before the Traffic Commissioners across England, Scotland and Wales. Mr Mullan’s wealth of experience regulating the operation and driving of goods vehicles in Northern Ireland will no doubt bring a significant advantage to his new role in the North-West and we look forward to appearing before him on this side of the water soon!
