FAQs

Q
What are the effects of a head injury?
A

The effects of a head injury vary depending on its cause and severity and, fundamentally, no two head injuries are the same, and no two injuries will have the same impact on the person who sustained the injury. If you’ve sustained a head injury, the impact it has on your life depends on what part of the brain has been damaged. Some of the most common effects of a head injury are:

  • Cognitive function - problems with cognitive functions, such as memory loss and reduced ability to solve problems, multitask or plan, can impact an individual’s ability to function independently
  • Motor function - reduced mobility due to a decline in physical abilities, which can mean an individual is reliant on others to help them with everyday activities
  • Emotional function - damage to the brain can result in behavioural changes, including mood swings, depression, apathy and a lack of personal awareness

Q
Are there any time limits on making a head injury claim?
A

An individual has a maximum of three years, under English and Welsh law, to make a claim for a head injury caused by an accident. In certain circumstances, such as being injured in an industrial accident, you may be able to claim after this period.

Q
Can I make a claim on someone's behalf?
A

If a friend or family member is too seriously injured to make a claim, you can act as a 'litigation friend' and pursue a head injury claim on their behalf. A litigation friend is responsible for making decision in respect of the injured party's claim.
