JMW has successfully helped a woman secure £90,000 compensation after doctors failed to diagnose breast cancer at an early stage resulting in numerous complications that were easily avoidable.

When Linda was 42 years old she found a small lump in her left breast and was referred to hospital. The lump was removed and found to be a fibroadenoma (non-cancerous).

However during investigations, doctors found some calcification of the right breast. This was biopsied and Linda was assured this was not cancerous, although it appears with hindsight that insufficient biopsies were taken.

It was recommended that she return for follow-up (in particular a mammogram) in a years time. When Linda returned to hospital, no mammogram was performed and she was discharged.

A year later, Linda returned to the hospital for further follow up of her right breast which by this point was hard. A mammogram and biopsy were performed and invasive breast cancer was diagnosed.

By the time of diagnosis the cancer had spread to Linda’s lymph nodes. She underwent a mastectomy and also a lymph node removal followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Long term effects

As a result Linda has experienced lymphodema, a condition where lymphatic fluid collects in the tissue. Had the cancer been diagnosed a year, or two years, earlier than it was Linda would not have experienced this symptom or have required radiotherapy.
